Icelandic Icelandic fleece is popular for both felting and spinning. Although it can be rather coarse (it is a double coated sheep and the longer "tog" fibers can be rather coarse), this particular fleece is of a lamb and has a soft hand. The lovely chocolate latte color of this fleece will look a shade darker once spun or felted. Although the felt bag shown below was not felted from this particular fleece, it is Icelandic (a greyer and lighter colored fleece) so I put it here for you to see the texture that Icelandic yields when felted (sorry for the side view...I couldn't find the photo of the bag front, but if you click on the photo it will blow up and you can see the surface that Icelandic felts). This fleece is sold neither washed nor carded. Icelandic sheep are very low lanolin, however, and this is a clean fleece, so it could be spun as is if you didn't want to wash it until the yarn stage. I offer it here for those of you who are interested in trying some Icelandic, but don't want to buy or wash/spin/felt an entire fleece. After washing and either carding or combing , I would expect you'd have about 5 ounces from the 6 you started with....so enough for a hat, scarf or pair of mittens! A customer who was in the store yesterday and had seen this fleece online commented on how much more chocolatey it looked in person. Maybe the new photo, right, which shows this fleece washed will give you a better idea of the color. Price per bag: $10 |
