Blue Faced Leceister

We have 11 colors of Juniper Moon's Blue Faced Leceister in stock!

Blue Faced Leceister is a breed of sheep belonging to the Long Wool class of British breeds. It's locks are usually 3-6" long (hence, Long Wool) and typically in the micron range of 24 - 28 (regular merino is 21.5 and most of the other long wools in the 25-35 range, for perspective). So it is pretty darn soft and the staple length of the locks yields a good durability to the yarn.

And.... because the locks of this breed are not so "crimpy" but rather have a ringlet/wave sort of configuration (see a sample of the lock formation in the right sidebar), the wool has a gorgeous drape and hand (as compared to Merino and Rambouillet and other "crimpier" breeds that have more elasticity and bounce and less drape). This type of lock structure is also what gives this yarn a lovely lustre.

This particular yarn is raised in England from farms that promise ethical production and it is spun in Turkey. The recommended gauge is 4.5 - 5 sts/inch on a US 6-7 needle

Be sure to click on the photos for a larger image where you can see the colors better! And also so you can appreciate the great stitch definition this yarn offers to cable and stitch patterns!

Each skein 220 yards. The yarn offers a wonderful drape and stitch definition making it a great choice for a classic sweater featuring travelling stitches, knit/purl stitches, cables, etc.

It is also MACHINE WASAHABLE at a cool temp (not above 80 degrees). This is NOT a "superwash" yarn, but is gently machine washable.

The cabled sweater pattern shown in the right sidebar takes 7, 8, 9 or 10 skeins for 40", 44", 48" or 54" finished chest measurement and if you order the yarn to knit this sweater.
