Buffalo/Bison There are 3 yarns/kits shown below: This down fiber actually comes from the Bison, sometimes called American Buffalo. Apparently the only true "buffalo" are indigenous only to Africa (the Cape Buffalo) and India (the water buffalo). Neither of the true buffalo produces a lovely fiber for knitting, but the American Bison does! If you've been to Yellowstone and seen the bison there you might wonder why in the world you'd want this next to your skin! When I was there in the springtime, the animals were shedding and looked absolutely ragged and the fiber you could see best, looked long and very coarse. But the fiber we collect for knitting yarn is, like from the qiviut or cashmere goat, the fine downy undercoat.
