Sat & Sun July 18th and 19th 10 - 5
Enjoy 2 full days extracting color from plants in the garden, wood chips from my brother's workshop, and even from table scraps! On the first day, you'll have an opportunity to dye yarn samples so you can see how differently wool, silk and cotton take the dyes...and so you have a great sample book showing each color so you can recreate them on your own should you choose to. At the end of this day, if you have 1-2 sks of wool or silk yarn (or fabric) that you'd like to dye in your favorite colors so you can knit a hat or sew a bag, you will have the opportunity to do that. Then on day two, you'll learn the fundamentals of using the same naturally inherent dye in plants to actually print leaves and flowers on a piece of cotton (or silk scarf if you prefer).
From learning various methods about how to extract the colors from plants to all about the mordants and tannins required for the dye to bind (so it's light and wash fast!), to how to use several "modifiers" to shift the colors for an even greater range of colors, you'll learn all the tools you need to enjoy natural dyeing and botanical printing thru the fall!
Price includes the yarn samples for your notebook, all the mordants, tannins, modifiers and dye materials (some of them are not indigenous to this area so I purchase them from abroad), propane, etc and a piece of cotton large enough that you could sew an accessory bag from it) or a silk scarf to print!
